Beloved Community

Beloved Community is an ongoing project focusing on the Black Lives Matter movement in Los Angeles, California. Our goal with this project is to document the movement unfolding in our communities, help raise awareness, to uplift and empower black voices, and show the ongoing actions taking place in Los Angeles.  We are using poetry, photography, and art to record and convey the people and emotions at the heart of the movement, and to enshrine this collective human experience in its purest form. This project is here to inspire our communities to continue the fight for black and brown liberation.

The images below are accompanied by poetry written by Persephone Rose Anansi, a nineteen-year-old Black trans activist, poet, and writer. If you are interested in purchasing photographs and poems, please visit the Store. 2/3rds of the proceeds will be donated to We the Movement.

We the Movement is an organization led by a diverse, unified community of change-makers who came together after the LA riots in late May. They gained traction through their peaceful and well organized protests. We the Movement is making it their priority to demand reform in politics, public policies, police conduct towards Black people, and systemic profiling; implement diversity training in every institution; and amplify the voices of the Black Community by means of inclusion, justice, representation, and equality. So far they have organized 12 protests since they met, including the Million People March on Juneteenth in Dunbar Village (which I attended and documented) and have worked with 15 different organizations. These funds will help We the Movement carry out their mission and continue the fight for justice.

Persephone Rose Anansi

“The story of Hades and Persephone, is one of the first stories I remember being told. When I came out as trans, it was this moment of rebirth. Persephone is the goddess of Spring, rebirth and growth but also the goddess of the dead. So it’s like this dichotomy, my old self has died and now celebrating the new life that comes with it”

Persephone Rose Anansi is a nineteen-year-old Black trans activist, poet, and writer from San Diego. She is a student at the Los Angeles Film School earning her bachelors degree in film production. Your Son is Dead is her most recent book release.
